I recently made a pseudo-cross country trip—Texas to Washington—with a few stops along the way to appease the better half. My first stop was Colorado Springs, his Las Vegas, Arizona was a necessary path to continue the journey. One that my paranoid self tried to find a way to avoid, but given the beautiful topography that part of the country was blessed with, was all but impossible.
So we did it, we went through Arizona. Never have I been more terrified of my completely-legal-to-drive and legal-to-be-in-this-country husband being behind the wheel. Knowing that he has no reason to be stopped other than the color of his skin has to be one of the most violating feelings I've ever experienced. And? We were stopped just about 5 miles shy of the Nevada border.
The reason? Well, it would seem that when he switched lanes (due to an emergency/police vehicle being parked on the shoulder), he didn't use a signal. In all honesty, I heard the blinker. Perhaps not for the expected 100 yards ahead of time, but it was used, fair enough.
But, is it fair? Thanks to a last minute stop in a one stop sign town in Texas to get an inspection sticker, we were driving through the state with zero tint on our front windows. The only difference between our car and every other car with varying state license plates is that someone with brown skin was driving ours. We are both US citizens…I've never faced this type of scrutiny...why should he?
Something about the way he said "Boy" to him while looking over his license left me believing that maybe—just maybe—brown is the new black. Well, at least in Arizona.
