Which country should the U.S. invade next?
Mr. Val-n-zway-la (as he likes to spell it out) was brought up in the North West’s Emerald City in the Evergreen state of Washington.
Vince is the youngest of five and was brought up by a Mexican father and an English/German mother.
His comedy is truly creative and takes you on a ride that will have you seeing the darkest of situations with a laugh; his outside the box approach to life keeps you on the light side of the track.
El Diablito interviews the very funny Vince Valenzuela:
VV: As a kid I liked watching movies and listening to comedy albums. I was the youngest of five so I was exposed to a lot of things at a very young age that I wasn’t supposed to know. But I think it was in college when I became interested in it, I tried it and liked it a lot.
When I moved back to Seattle I began doing open mikes and what not but it was when I discovered the art of it I gained a different appreciation and frustration all at once, so it was probably in college when I said I want to do this or at least try it.
DBO: Were your parents supportive about your career decision?
VV: My parents are very supportive of all their kids, they let us have our own individualities and own interest, whatever those may be. There were no paradigms where you’re going to follow this model, you’re going to grow up and go to law school or any of that kind of stuff. My dad was an educator, he was a teacher and a counselor so he worked with kids a lot and both my parents wanted us to have our own entity our own individual interests and they always stressed to do things one hundred and ten percent or don’t do them at all. In that way they’ve always been supportive and always told me to be happy.
DBO: What do you want your comedy to bring to your audience?
VV: Well obviously I want them to enjoy it. I would hope that people see that I’m a guy that at least tries to use my brain. I want people to see the humor of things no matter how dark they can be, like taken a complex topic and making that palatable to the masses and it’s not an easy thing to do.
DBO: What inspires you to write comedy?
VV: To me its things that frustrate me, what irritates me, a social commentary or things like that; then I put my take on that, my point of view or my reaction to it. But it has to really move me in some way. I have something I call a “Comedy Funnel” when I start the funnel is huge but then I begin to see what I can make funny, but it narrows down to something that pinches you.
DBO: What do you think of the Latino community in Seattle?
VV: I can tell you when I was growing up there was no Latino community. I’m not making that up. Nobody knew anything about Mexican food, you would go to school with a burrito for lunch and kids would ask me what that was. But all that has changed.
DBO: Which comedian do you most admire?
VV: Richard Prior
DBO: What comes to mind when you hear the word "Latino"?
VV: How ridiculous the word Hispanic is. Because what that means is that there is some weird country I’ve never seen on a map called Hispania, I never seen it on a map and I never been there. But apparently there are a lot of people that come from there and they’re called Hispanics. But really to me it means diversity of what it embraces, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Salvadorian, Mexican, Mexican/American…etc. So it’s very diverse, they want to generalize and painted with a broad brush but it’s very diverse.
DBO: Will you embrace Vince Val-n-zway-la Latino Sensation?
VV: Well it’s a joke about me being a Latino sensation, I’m making a joke about myself because I don’t fit or embody what a Latino sensation should be. If I have to be the one to except the crown for Latino sensation… Yes! I would accept it, I would be proud to wear the crown.
