Rebecca Beesley is the bee's knees

beesleyAt just 20-years-old, Rebecca Beesley, originally from Draper, Utah, has achieved more than many of us hope to achieve in a lifetime. By fearlessly pursuing her dreams, Beesley, who moved to the Northwest about a year and a half ago to attend the International Academy of Design & Technology in Seattle, stole the show at the 3rd Annual Project Red Dress by winning both the People’s Choice and the Grand Prize for the event, which includes a $3,000 scholarship as well as an internship and a window display with Luly Yang, Seattle’s authority on Haute Couture.

With just 16 hours to construct a high fashion garment, Beesley, along with 11 other competitors, unveiled her creation in a stunning fashion show produced by Project Red Dress creator, Monir Zandghoreishi, and directed by Eduardo Khawam, producer and director of the Forbidden Fashion Show.

Beesley took time out from her busy schedule to meet with El Diablito and share some of her thoughts and feelings on Project Red Dress, fashion and life in general.

EL DIABLITO: How long have you been interested in fashion?
BEESLEY: I wouldn’t say all my life; I think it became more pronounced when I got into high school.

DBO: Did you like to dress fashionably, like the way other people looked or was it more of an art angle?
BEES: It was more of “I love constructing garments…” I’m not necessarily the most fashionable person, but I think there’s a difference between dressing fashionably and seeing things that could potentially be fashionable.

DBO: So, you’re a creator…
BEES: I’m a creator.

DBO: Who’s your favorite designer?
BEES: Giorgio Armani…I just love his designs because [they] really do stand the test of time.

DBO: Have you made a decision to make fashion as your career?
BEES: Yes, I would love to. I’m more specifically interested in bridal design, though…I think I want to take that route.

DBO: And why is that?
BEES: Honestly…I was browsing the Internet my senior year and I fell upon a wedding dress, fell absolutely in love, and was like, you know what? This is what I want to do. And then I started working at a bridal sho,p and I just can’t get enough of, you know, hearing about wedding days and wedding plans and what brides want to wear and their vision…and I love dresses–wedding dresses—you can’t really go wrong with all the delicate fabrics and the story or the meaning behind why people get married.

DBO: So, you’re a romantic?
BEES: I’m a hopeless romantic...but I was never one of those little girls who dreamed about their wedding…I still don’t really, so it’s nice that I can sort of take myself out of that and be more focused on the person that’s coming in.

DBO: What are your immediate plans?
BEES: I’m graduating in July and then I fly off to London to do an internship and take a couple classes over there for my last three months, and then I’m officially, officially graduated.

DBO: And after that, you plan on coming back to the states?
BEES: I think I’m going to go home for a little…I kind of miss being around my family… And it’ll be just kind of like a nice breather…I don’t want to do anything for like two weeks. I just want to hang out—I want to not think about doing homework, because I’ll never have to do it again.

DBO: Did you know you were going to win project Red Dress going into it?
BEES: No.

DBO: Did you have any sense of victory?
BEES: I thought that my design and my construction were creative enough and that I had completed enough of my garment that I would at least place or get close to placing, but I didn’t know that I would win. I think that everyone took on such a different approach…none of the dresses necessarily looked anything like each other…the way that people use materials and how they use them, I just think that everyone had a really creative ability…there’s a reason they made it into the competition.

DBO: Which was your favorite dress—other than your own, of course?
BEES: That’s a hard question…there were different reasons why I liked different dresses…Jason who had…it almost reminded me of Japanese animé how it had the knee highs…I really liked his just because his styling, you know, it was a complete package…everything was working for me…the model was absolutely gorgeous…she had the right accessories, her hair, her makeup. And then Ginger, who was second place…she had absolutely amazing construction…I was peeking on the inside and her sewing was just immaculate, everything was well done.
