“Kickass” comienza como muchas de las películas de superhéroes. Incluso los créditos iniciales parecen un lugar común mientras los nombres de la gente involucrada vuelan hacia nosotros a través de nubes al estilo de las películas “Superman” con Christopher Revé. La música es también de John Williams. Hay un vengador enmascarado sentado en lo alto de un rascacielos mirando sobre una gran metrópoli. Extiende sus falsas alas y da saltos. Un grupo de espectadores jadea y luego aplaude; ¿realmente está pasando esto? El cruzado se lanza a una velocidad suicida y justo antes de levantar su vuelo choca de golpe contra un auto estacionado y muere instantáneamente. Es entonces cuando el director Matthew Vaughn establece lo que hace su filme extraordinario. Ésta es una película de un superhéroe que opera (la mayor parte) en un mundo donde la física y el dolor existen. Un lugar comúnmente referido como “El Mundo Real”. Cuando una película hace la afirmación de que está “basada en una historia verdadera” , es fácil ponerse receloso. Entonces muy seguido estos filmes simplemente explotan un evento trágico o replantean y reinterpretan los hechos a tal grado que la historia original se pierde completamente en la ficción. Hay ocasiones extrañas cuando una película basada en hechos reales emite una luz sobre un pequeño cuento conocido que es de lo más inspirador y conmovedor porque realmente sucedió. “El juego perfecto” es un ejemplo de lo anterior. A pesar de algunos errores, el filme consigue su propósito. Es una película “para sentirse bien” que entrega calidez, melcocha y sentimientos encontrados.

La cinta cuenta el ascenso en 1957 del equipo de las ligas infantiles de Monterrey, México. Vemos a un grupo de deshilachados niños que lo único que querían era la oportunidad de jugar un juego real de béisbol. Aprenden las alegrías de jugar en un solar con la ayuda de César (Clifton Collins Jr.,) un aspirante a entrenador de las Ligas Mayores al que se le ha dificultado su carrera por la discriminación endémica de los tiempos. Los chicos deben sortear muchos obstáculos como la falta de recursos y el prejuicio antes que se les conceda su propio equipo de Ligas Infantiles. Armados únicamente con suerte, talento e inocencia los niños consiguen una increíble y avasallante victoria en la Serie Mundial Infantil.

“El juego perfecto” es muy efectiva haciéndonos alentar a estos chicos. Es una película familiar en el estricto sentido del término. La música es recargada en ocasiones, haciendo momentos ñoños incluso más ñoños. Clifton Collins Jr. es agradable en su rol de líder pero falla al mostrarse como César. Cheech Marin tiene una interpretación diferente como el Padre Esteban, el guía espiritual de los niños en su jornada. Cheech parece en casa con este rol pero no le dan mucho que hacer. Después de un rato es relegado a sentarse por ahí pareciendo aburrido.

La historia detrás de “El Juego Perfecto” es realmente excitante y edificante. La idea de este grupo de niños consiguiendo tanto a pesar de tener todo en contra es profundamente conmovedora. Este es el tipo de entretenimiento “emoción para llevar” que puede ser efectivo si lo dejas ser. Hay razón suficiente para levantarse y vitorear.

 

 

Many rock and roll documentaries (Rocu Docues) share many of the same elements. Films like “The Doors,” “Walk the Line” and “Ray” all deal with sex, drugs and unsupportive parents that drive our lead characters to great heights and terrible depths. In the most extreme cases, someone dies in the end with their most popular song blaring in the background. What great Rocu Docues do to transcend the trappings of the genre is to rely on powerful performances to guide us through these familiar stories. “The Runaways” hits all the basic elements dead on target. There is the terrible parenting, the rampant drug snorting and pill guzzling, and same sex situations (girls kissing girls). What the film is missing are the potent performances that invite us to ignore the movies heavy-handed clichés. “The Runaways” is run of the mill.

“The Runaways” is about the creation and destruction of the band, The Runaways, led by Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), the band’s lead singer and underage bombshell. We meet up with Cherie at the innocent age of fifteen as she is struggling to deal with her broken home. Obsessed with David Bowie and frequenting the local clubs, she meets Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart). Joan is a leather-clad rock chick with a too-tight-jeans-swagger before such a thing existed. Under the guidance of the self-proclaimed rock god/record producer, Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), the girls form the first all-girls rock band and find almost immediate success. The hard and hectic lifestyle soon proves to be too much for Cherie, and she quickly begins to spiral downward.

Kristen Stewart does a solid job bringing the iconic Joan Jett to cinematic life. The performance is commanding, and you immediately identify her as Jett once she first is seen on screen. She is even more convincing once she takes to the stage with guitar in hand. With this performance and her work in “Adventureland,” Stewart has established herself as a young actor with a shining future.

The film is all but stolen by Michael Shannon in the role of ever-eccentric Kim Fowley. Shannon seems possessed by some coke-fueled rock demon as he runs about the film spewing warped words of wisdom. He gives the film what little spark it has, and if the rest of the cast had followed his lead, “The Runaways” could have been a classic.

Unfortunately, “The Runaways” weakest link is the actor that has the most screen time. Dakota Fanning, who established herself as a terrific child actor, seems out of her depths here as Cherie. The role demands a maturity that Fanning has not yet reached. The filmmakers would have done better by casting someone older in the role. Fanning’s age also limits the films handling of the sexual aspects of the story. The sex is so tame in the film that it seems like it belongs in a “made-for-TV” movie.

The rise of The Runaways is an interesting and important story. This was a group of women that lead the way for many artists to follow. They were the first all-girl rock band, and getting there wasn’t easy. The film does not do their story justice, and it’s a shame—they deserve better.
